Communication Skills Task

Due to this module being called Employability & Enterprise the aim is to focus on our employability skills and to gain an insight into how it might be like to work in the Graphic Design industry. Communication skills are extremely important when working with a design company because you need to get your personality across to the interviewer and discuss ideas with others. Many agencies will not only look at the standard of your work and the way you work but also how you fit into the team. Many designers and clients also contact and meet one another through networking so communication is an important aspect in design.

Today we completed a task which involved working in groups of three. We were given five questions to ask each other to get talking as a group and start a conversation. These questions were:

Which design book would you recommend?

Which company would you most like to work for?

Who would you love to have dinner with?

What’s your favourite film?

Where is the best place you have ever had a holiday?

The questions were set out to see how we would perform in an interview scenario. I believe as a group I worked well as I answered and listened to the questions set to see what other people in my group had to say. The first question in particular was a question I struggled with as I have never read a design book so this has taught me I need more of a traditional reading knowledge rather than just reading what is on the internet. Also watching design films is something I think I need to do to give me another way to learn about design. I really enjoyed this task as it got me thinking of how to communicate to others by just answering these questions and listening to others’ answers too. What I have took away from this task is to be more talkative and confident because when it comes to being interviewed for a design company I am going to need strong communication skills and design knowledge.
